Atletico Madrid has shown a strong reaction after conceding the lead to Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. They have managed to draw level shortly after the halftime interval at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Arsenal had taken the lead in the 44th minute from a penalty. David Hancko brought down Viktor Gyokeres, who then successfully converted the spot-kick to open the scoring. Atletico Madrid needed a swift start to the second half to get back into the match, and they achieved just that with a penalty of their own.
Alvarez’s Emphatic Penalty Brings Atleti Level
VAR prompted a penalty decision in favor of Atleti following a handball by Arsenal defender Ben White. Julian Alvarez stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake, powerfully striking the ball to David Raya’s right.
Manager Simeone will undoubtedly be pleased with his team’s response after falling behind. Arsenal are considered one of the best defensive teams in Europe, yet Atletico Madrid has found a way to break through their defense. They will be hoping to do so again before the first leg concludes.
