Football News

Juventus has officially completed the signing of Canadian international forward Jonathan David. The attacker joins the Turin club on a five-year contract, set to run until June 2030. David arrives from Lille, where he spent five highly successful seasons in France`s Ligue 1. During his time there, he made 232 appearances, scoring 109 goals and providing 30 assists, solidifying his reputation as one of Europe`s sought-after attacking talents.

The 24-year-old marks Juventus` first significant acquisition of the summer transfer window under the guidance of new coach Igor Tudor. His arrival has generated considerable excitement among the club`s supporters. Juventus welcomed him with a video tribute acknowledging his “Iceman” nickname, and over 200 fans gathered outside the club`s medical center as he underwent his medical examination and finalized his contract.

David`s progression throughout his career has been marked by consistent development and notable achievements, as highlighted in the club`s official statement. Born in Brooklyn to Haitian parents and raised in Ottawa, the striker began his professional journey with Belgian side Gent. There, he netted 37 goals in 83 matches and finished as the top scorer in the Belgian league during the 2019/20 season. Following his move to Lille in 2020, he consistently scored double-digit goals in every Ligue 1 campaign, playing a key role in the club`s 2020/21 French title win and the subsequent Supercup victory.

He has also made a significant impact on the international stage for the Canadian national team. Since his debut in 2018, David has scored 35 goals in 66 appearances, including two goals in his very first international cap. These statistics underscore his reliability as a goalscorer and his ability to perform in crucial moments for both club and country.

Speaking to Juventus` media channels after signing, David reflected on the importance of joining the club. “It`s an honor,” he stated. “Growing up, I admired Juventus and considered it one of the top ten clubs in the world.” He described his playing style: “I love scoring and being involved in the play. My biggest strength is finding spaces and being in the right place at the right time.” Looking ahead to his new challenge, he added, “Playing in Serie A is a challenge I look forward to—adapting to a new league, new team-mates, and aiming to win.”

David also acknowledged the historical significance of being the first Canadian player to wear the Juventus jersey, expressing his hope that his move would pave the way for more talented Canadian players in the future. He clearly articulated his goals for his time at the club: “I hope to have an excellent season and do whatever I can to help us win trophies.”

The transfer fee for David is reported to be €12.5 million, payable over three years. Bringing in David fulfills a key objective for the Juventus management to bolster their attacking options. Further activity in the transfer market is anticipated as the club looks to strengthen its squad and improve its competitive position.
