Spain’s World Cup preparations have encountered a setback as manager Luis de la Fuente may have to do without Lamine Yamal for their initial match in the United States. With the squad announcement approaching, La Roja are already revising their tactical plans.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Fermin Lopez is expected to miss the entire World Cup due to a foot injury sustained after Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Real Betis. Lopez was considered a near-certainty for the squad, but de la Fuente must now explore alternative options.
The Athletic reports that Lamine Yamal is unlikely to be fit for Spain’s opening game against Cape Verde on June 15th. The 18-year-old, who is recovering from a hamstring tear, is also a significant doubt for their second fixture against Saudi Arabia on June 21st. Spain’s final group stage match is against Uruguay five days later.
During an appearance at the King’s League, where Yamal presides over a team and could potentially be called upon to take a penalty, he was asked about his participation. Responding with a laugh, he stated, “Obviously not me, I’m not touching a ball until the World Cup.” The young player ironically injured himself while taking a penalty against Espanyol last month.
His declaration suggests he holds optimism about returning in time for the tournament. With concerns also raised about the fitness of Nico Williams and Mikel Merino, Spain will be eager for Lamine Yamal to be fully recovered for the knockout stages. The Spanish squad is scheduled to be announced next Monday, May 25th.
