Barcelona secured a victory against Espanyol on Saturday evening, with late goals from Lamine Yamal and Marcus Rashford sealing the win. It was somewhat surprising that more Barcelona players did not prioritize rest ahead of their vital Champions League second leg, as they aim to overcome a two-goal deficit.
The Catalan club made five alterations between the matches. However, Lamine Yamal, Gerard Martin, Eric Garcia, and Pedri Gonzalez all started, with three of them completing the entire game. Martin was substituted at halftime due to ankle pain but is anticipated to be fit for the Atletico Madrid fixture. All four are expected to be in the starting lineup on Tuesday night.
Lamine Yamal Played Through Pain Against Espanyol
According to Toni Juanmarti of the Siempre Positivo Podcast, Lamine Yamal was not at his full capacity prior to the Espanyol game. He reported on Monday that he had confirmed with sources the day before Barcelona’s match against Espanyol that the young winger was experiencing discomfort. Despite the potential risk of injury, Lamine Yamal was eager to participate and subsequently delivered a match-winning performance, contributing a goal and an assist.
Barcelona Faces Midfield Selection Uncertainty
Nonetheless, there appears to be little doubt that Lamine Yamal will be ready to face Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano. The 18-year-old is expected to be the focal point of their comeback attempt. The main concerns lie in the midfield support provided to him.
Eric Garcia and Pedri Gonzalez started in both the Atletico and Espanyol matches, and this arrangement might continue. However, with Pau Cubarsi suspended, Hansi Flick might consider moving Garcia back to a central defensive role. This would also necessitate one of Frenkie de Jong or Marc Bernal, both returning from injuries, partnering Pedri, or Marc Casado starting. Casado, however, has largely been out of favor with Flick this season.
