Bruno Genesio on OM's Pre-Season: "I Sense Very Positive Energy"
Marseille coach Bruno Genesio shared his thoughts ahead of the team's season opener, expressing a sense of optimism and positive energy surrounding the squad.
Regarding Leonardo Balerdi's performance against Atlético de Madrid, Genesio acknowledged that while the player was doing well until the first goal, the constant whistling he received made the situation difficult for both Balerdi and himself. Genesio emphasized that mistakes are part of the game and that it's regrettable to see a player being criticized so harshly. He believes that such reactions are not the best response for the team or the player and stated his unwavering support for Balerdi and all his players.
Reflecting on the pre-season preparation, which has spanned six weeks, Genesio noted that players who joined later are naturally a bit behind in their fitness. However, he observed a significant increase in the team's performance throughout the matches, particularly in the last two against strong opponents like Bilbao and Atlético de Madrid. Genesio highlighted positive aspects such as effective pressing, counter-pressing, and fluid offensive play with numerous combinations and movements. He pointed out that the team is creating chances against one of Europe's top defenses, but also identified areas for improvement in small details that can make a crucial difference. He cited the second goal conceded against Atlético as an example where a counter-pressing effort was not executed sufficiently, emphasizing the need to correct such lapses to enhance performance.
When asked about how the team has received his instructions since his arrival, Genesio reported a very positive reception. He praised the players' commitment and investment, noting that they are attentive and eager to perform well. While acknowledging that not everything is always executed perfectly, he believes many good things are being implemented. He also took into account that the team has lost several key players from the previous season, a transition that cannot happen overnight. Overall, Genesio considers the preparation to be positive and senses a very good energy within the squad.
On the physical aspect, Genesio confirmed that the team's objective of increasing playing time in the recent match was met, as they approach the competition opener against Strasbourg on August 21st. He expressed cautious optimism, stating that if the team can replicate their performance in terms of play and spirit, they can be confident. Genesio was pleasantly surprised by the group he inherited at the start of pre-season, sensing full buy-in and investment from the players. He believes the team understands their objectives and is convinced they are on the right path to achieving results, but stressed that everything needs to be validated in the league.
