Manuel Neuer on Greatest Goalkeeper Debate: ‘It Depends on the Era’

Football

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has refrained from naming a single best goalkeeper of all time, suggesting that the title is era-dependent. Neuer himself is frequently mentioned in such discussions, as is Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois.

Neuer, a prominent figure in 21st-century goalkeeping, acknowledged a mistake in their 2024 Champions League semi-final clash against Real Madrid. He mentioned that discussions within his team leading up to the match did not focus on past encounters.

“No. We are aware of their history in this competition, but as professionals, we focus on the present. And right now, we are playing against this Real Madrid. A team that, on a good day, can defeat anyone. But so can we. In fact, we beat them at the Bernabéu. Playing at the Allianz Arena offers an advantage,” Neuer told Diario AS.

Manuel Neuer: ‘The Only Advantage is a Goal’

Echoing manager Vincent Kompany’s cautious sentiment, Neuer stated that his team’s lead was slim, despite speculation of a potential comeback.

“Our only advantage is a one-goal lead, but it’s Real Madrid, a formidable opponent. We’re fortunate to be playing the second leg at home and are relying on our fans. We are highly motivated and prepared. It’s a good position to be in… but we must remain vigilant, as we’ve witnessed Real Madrid’s ability to win in the past.”

Neuer Remains Neutral on Best Goalkeeper Debate

When questioned about his opinion on the greatest goalkeeper of all time, Neuer offered a nuanced perspective.

“It’s challenging; it depends on the era. In recent years… it’s insufficient to name just two or three; there are many, each with their unique style. For Real Madrid, currently, it’s hard to overlook Courtois. However, looking back, Schmeichel, Kahn, Buffon, Casillas… they were all exceptional. I don’t see a single ‘best of all time’; it’s context-dependent.”

Earlier in the season, Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa expressed that, in his opinion, Courtois was the finest goalkeeper he had ever witnessed at the Santiago Bernabéu. Undoubtedly, the Belgian is considered by many to be the top goalkeeper in Spain.
