Premier League sporting directors have convened to discuss a growing concern within the top flight: the increasing prevalence of goals scored from set pieces and the issue of holding within the penalty area. These trends, which currently see set pieces (excluding penalties) accounting for a significant 27.1% of all goals this season, are feared to be detracting from the overall spectacle and entertainment value of top-flight football.
The discussion highlights worries that such tactics might be impacting the quality of open play and the flow of games. Even prominent figures like Liverpool’s incoming head coach, Arne Slot, have voiced their disapproval. When asked about the rising importance of set pieces this week, Slot candidly expressed, “my football heart doesn’t like it,” reflecting a sentiment that the game’s essence might be shifting away from free-flowing attacking play.
