Premier League Set to Reject Extended VAR Powers Next Season

The Premier League is expected to decline the proposition of broadening the scope of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the upcoming season. This decision follows discussions with the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO), the body responsible for referees.

A recent regulation amendment, sanctioned by the International Football Association Board (Ifab) in February, permits VAR to make decisions on corner kicks and second yellow cards. These expanded powers are slated for implementation at the World Cup, a move requested by Fifa. However, Ifab has designated this new law as optional, empowering individual leagues and competitions to choose whether to incorporate it.

While the final verdict will be determined by the Premier League clubs at their annual general meeting next month, the PGMO has officially recommended against extending VAR’s current application.
