Braga 1-1 Real Betis

Real Betis ensured a level playing field for their crucial second leg at La Cartuja next week, securing a 1-1 draw against Braga in their Europa League quarter-final first leg. A well-taken second-half penalty by Cucho Hernandez ultimately earned the Spanish side a result in Portugal that manager Manuel Pellegrini deemed satisfactory.

Pellegrini opted for what appeared to be a cautious starting eleven, deploying Pablo Fornals in a more advanced role while Antony remained on the bench. The Verdiblancos endured a torrid start, conceding within just four minutes when Florian Grillitsch capitalized on a near-post set-piece. However, Betis gradually stabilized, finding their rhythm, with Marc Bartra threatening Braga’s goal with two headers from set pieces – one disallowed for offside, the other striking the post.

As the first half progressed, Cucho Hernandez began to pose a greater threat to Braga’s defense, setting up Ez Abde whose shot was well saved by Luka Hornicek. Braga, however, created two more clear-cut opportunities before halftime, including a powerful Joao Moutinho strike that Natan bravely blocked.

Hernandez’s Penalty Proves Crucial for Betis

The second half saw Antony introduced, but it was Braga who initially dominated. The Portuguese outfit controlled possession and spent significant time in Betis’s half during the first 15 minutes. Nevertheless, just past the hour mark, Antony initiated a swift counter-attack, sweeping the ball left to Abde, who was fouled inside the penalty area. Hernandez stepped up confidently, smashing the penalty into the left corner to level the score.

Despite conceding, Braga maintained their attacking intensity, continuously pressing Betis. Yet, the Verdiblancos demonstrated resilience, avoiding any defensive errors and holding firm under pressure. In injury time, Antony nearly snatched a late lead for Betis on another counter, firing an effort just wide of the post.

Following the match, Pellegrini expressed his satisfaction to Marca, describing the away draw as a “good result.” He commended his team’s character after falling behind early and confirmed Antony’s bench role was due to injury, stating, “it’ll come as no surprise to you he’s playing with discomfort, playing two games in a row is very difficult for him.”
