Real Madrid is preparing for significant defensive adjustments this summer, though perhaps not as extensive as initially speculated. A new central defender is anticipated to join the squad at the Bernabéu. Additionally, David Alaba is projected to depart upon the expiration of his contract this summer. The primary question revolves around whether a second change will occur in the central defensive department.
This situation largely depends on the future of Antonio Rüdiger. The 33-year-old German international’s current contract also concludes this summer. Earlier in the season, there were strong indications he might also be moved on, with Los Blancos reportedly planning to acquire two new defenders.
Rüdiger Reportedly Nearing Contract Extension
However, insights from Matteo Moretto, shared on RadioMarca, indicate that Rüdiger is nearing an agreement for a new contract. While discussions are still active and no definitive decision has been reached, Moretto’s sources suggest he is more likely to stay at Real Madrid than to leave. Despite ongoing concerns from Los Blancos regarding his fitness, particularly his knee – which has been diagnosed with early-onset arthritis – progress is reportedly being made towards a one-year extension.
Rüdiger’s Recent Injury History
Late last season, Rüdiger underwent knee surgery, sidelining him for six weeks. A second medical intervention occurred this September, leading to approximately three months of absence. Furthermore, he sustained a third injury within a year in January. Cumulatively, he has missed 21 games this season, featuring in only 17 matches.
Nevertheless, Rüdiger has consistently regained his starting position upon recovering from injuries, vying for a spot alongside Raul Asencio and Dean Huijsen. As one of Real Madrid’s seasoned players, especially with Alaba’s anticipated departure, only Thibaut Courtois, Dani Carvajal, Dani Ceballos, and Ferland Mendy from the current squad will be in their thirties next season. Speculation suggests that among these four, only Courtois’s continuity is assured.
