Real Madrid Transfer Boost? Schlotterbeck Denies Dortmund Contract Renewal

Football

Real Madrid has made signing a central defender a key priority for the upcoming summer transfer window, although the specific target they will pursue remains undecided. Initially, Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano was considered a top choice, but the French international recently extended his contract with the Bavarian giants in February, committing his future to the club.

Following Upamecano’s renewal, several other defensive talents have been linked with Los Blancos, including Castello Lukeba, Nico Schlotterbeck, and Ibrahima Konate. While the Liverpool defender Konate was initially not a primary option, his potential availability, coupled with Upamecano’s extension, has reportedly brought him back onto Madrid’s radar. However, Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck is currently the player most strongly associated with Real Madrid’s transfer ambitions.

Schlotterbeck Dispels Dortmund Contract Renewal Rumors

In recent weeks, rumors circulated that Schlotterbeck was close to signing a new deal with Dortmund. The 26-year-old’s existing contract runs until 2027, and with a few years remaining, his contractual situation has reportedly alerted several elite clubs to a potential transfer opportunity.

Speaking to BILD, as quoted by Diario AS, Schlotterbeck definitively denied that a new agreement with Dortmund is close.

“I’m glad you asked, because I read it in your news today. To be honest, I have to categorically deny it. Unfortunately, we haven’t reached that point yet,” Schlotterbeck stated.

He elaborated further on the situation: “I negotiated with Sebastian [Kehl, former BVB sporting director] for a long time. Sebastian is no longer here. Now Ole [Book, sporting director] will be my contact person, along with Lars [Ricken, Managing Director]. That’s why I was looking forward to the question. But what you’re saying isn’t true at all. I’ve already spoken with him, but we haven’t reached the point where a renewal is imminent. It’s also bad for BVB fans, but as I’ve said, it’s not an easy situation for me.”

Real Madrid Potentially in a Favorable Position

Prior reports from Germany suggested that Schlotterbeck is eager for a move to Real Madrid this summer and would prioritize an offer from the Spanish club should it materialize. His other preferred destination, Bayern Munich, is now less likely to pursue him after Upamecano’s recent contract extension. The critical question for Los Blancos will be whether they are prepared to meet Dortmund’s asking price for a player who might fall slightly outside their typical age demographic for substantial transfer investments.
