Real Madrid, looking to bolster their midfield this summer, may miss out on their primary target, Rodri Hernandez, as the Manchester City star seems poised to remain at the Etihad Stadium.
Following his Ballon d’Or win in 2024, Rodri was identified as Real Madrid’s preferred midfield acquisition last summer. However, an anterior cruciate ligament injury put any potential transfer on hold. Throughout the current season, Real Madrid has monitored his recovery, but recent reports suggest their interest has waned, with this summer’s World Cup potentially influencing the situation.
Manchester City Nearing New Contract for Rodri
According to Matteo Moretto, Manchester City is close to finalizing a new contract with Rodri before the World Cup. If signed, this agreement would significantly diminish the likelihood of a move to Los Blancos. Moretto indicates that Rodri has been in negotiations with City for weeks regarding a new deal, as the club is eager to retain his services for at least another year.
The Italian transfer expert also notes that Real Madrid has not initiated any contact with Manchester City regarding Rodri’s transfer or made any official bids. Consequently, Rodri is now closer to extending his contract with the English club.
Real Madrid’s Lingering Midfield Concerns
Since the departure of Toni Kroos, Real Madrid has struggled to adequately fill the void left by the German midfielder, despite the presence of players like Eduardo Camavinga, Fede Valverde, and Jude Bellingham. This has fueled speculation about a summer midfield signing. However, few concrete candidates have emerged. While players such as Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister, and AZ Alkmaar prodigy Kees Smit have been linked with moves to the Bernabeu, Real Madrid appears to be undecided on their primary transfer target.
