Real Madrid’s Support During War Played a Role in Sealing Contract Renewal

Football

Real Madrid is counting on Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin to help them achieve a surprising comeback against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals. Lunin has performed exceptionally well over the past two seasons when called upon to fill in for Thibaut Courtois.

It was Lunin’s penalty-saving heroics that propelled Los Blancos to the 2024 Champions League final. However, he was controversially dropped for Courtois in the semi-final and final. Reports at the time indicated that Lunin was deeply disappointed by this decision. With his contract nearing its end, Lunin was heavily rumored to be seeking a move to a club where he would be a guaranteed starter. Yet, in September of that year, he unexpectedly signed a six-year contract extension.

Lunin Grateful for Real Madrid’s Response to the Ukraine-Russia War

According to Diario AS, one of the key factors influencing his decision was gratitude. The publication explains that Lunin was thankful for Real Madrid’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The club immediately offered their full support to him and his family, providing emotional and institutional assistance during a challenging period, a gesture he has never forgotten.

Successor to Thibaut Courtois?

Another potential factor that could keep Lunin at the club for the long term is the opportunity to eventually succeed Courtois as the undisputed number one goalkeeper. The Belgian international will turn 34 in May and has experienced an increasing number of injuries since 2023. While Courtois remains the clear first-choice and still possesses top-level ability, his advancing age and injury history naturally lead to discussions about the future.

Currently, there has been little public talk about Real Madrid actively searching for a successor, suggesting that the club views Courtois as their primary goalkeeper for several more years. Nevertheless, the conversation about who will eventually replace the highly influential Courtois at the Santiago Bernabéu is becoming increasingly prominent.
