After a prolonged absence from England`s top football echelon, Sunderland AFC is strategically positioning itself for a return to the Premier League, scheduled for mid-August 2025. This planned comeback is underscored by a clear and substantial investment strategy, notably centered around acquiring African football talent.
The recent summer transfer window serves as a compelling indicator of this renewed focus. Out of six primary incoming transfers, five players hail from Africa, representing a significant commitment in both capital and strategic direction for the Black Cats.
The initial high-profile acquisition saw Senegalese midfielder Habib Diarra arrive from Strasbourg for a fee of €31.5 million, setting a new club record. This move was swiftly followed by the €17 million signing of Congolese prospect Noah Sadiki from Union Saint-Gilloise. A notable addition to the defense came in the form of Mozambican international Reinildo Mandava, formerly of Atlético Madrid, secured on a free transfer—a technically astute piece of business.
Further bolstering the squad`s attacking options, Sunderland invested €20 million in Belgian-Moroccan winger Chemsdine Talbi from Club Brugge. Perhaps the most experienced top-flight arrival is Ivorian international Simon Adingra, signed from Brighton for €24 million. Adingra brings proven Premier League pedigree, having already accumulated 60 appearances and scored 8 goals at the age of 23.
While the strategic emphasis is predominantly on African talent, the recruitment phase was not exclusive. French midfielder Enzo Le Fée also joined from AS Roma for €23 million, adding further depth and quality to the squad structure. Cumulatively, these six transfers account for an investment exceeding €115 million.
This substantial expenditure and deliberate focus on players from the African continent sends a clear signal: Sunderland is not merely aiming for promotion but is actively constructing a new team identity, placing African talent at the core of its ambitious project for its anticipated re-entry into the Premier League.
