Villarreal is preparing for the upcoming season, currently without a contracted manager. Although the team is on track for a top-four finish, the future of Marcelino Garcia Toral at La Ceramica next year remains uncertain.
Marcelino is widely regarded as one of Villarreal’s most successful managers, and their La Liga performance this season has been outstanding. Nevertheless, an early exit from the Copa del Rey against Racing Santander and a disappointing Champions League showing have dampened spirits, raising questions about his contract extension.
Villarreal and Marcelino Pause Renewal Talks
Diario AS reported on Tuesday that Villarreal and Marcelino have suspended discussions regarding a new contract, intending to resume them only after the current season concludes. Last December, Villarreal proposed a one-year extension with an option for an additional year contingent on achieving certain goals. Marcelino found the offer unsatisfactory, leading to the mutual decision to postpone further negotiations.
Villarreal’s Champions League campaign was underwhelming. While both parties express a desire to continue their collaboration, neither seems prepared to strongly advocate for the current arrangement if the other proposes a change. Marcelino, for his part, is not actively seeking a new position.
Villarreal Sounds Out Two Potential Replacements
RadioMarca reports that Villarreal has begun exploring potential alternative candidates should they fail to reach an agreement with Marcelino. Girona’s coach Michel Sanchez and former Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil have reportedly been approached as possible successors.
Alguacil’s recent tenure in Saudi Arabia with Al-Shabab was brief and unsuccessful, concluding last month; however, he boasts a strong performance record from his extensive time at Real Sociedad. Similarly, Michel Sanchez has continually exceeded expectations during his time at Girona, guiding them to a historic third-place position.
