Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior has acknowledged difficulties in his relationship with Xabi Alonso during their shared time at the club. A public disagreement arose when the Brazilian forward was substituted during October’s El Clásico, and despite outward statements suggesting otherwise, their professional dynamic reportedly remained strained.
During El Clásico, with Real Madrid leading 2-1, Alonso substituted Vinicius, who reacted angrily, muttering, “Always me, I’m better off leaving.” This event is often highlighted as a critical moment that led to a deterioration of Alonso’s relationship with the dressing room. Vinicius himself confirmed the challenging nature of their bond in a statement preceding Los Blancos’ Champions League match against Bayern Munich.
Vinicius stated, “I featured in games, but often for limited minutes. Each coach employs their own distinct methods, and I simply didn’t establish the connection he sought. Nonetheless, it proved to be a valuable learning period, and I truly hope to continue under Arbeloa, given the excellent rapport we share and the consistent confidence he instills in me.”
Vinicius Reflects on El Clásico Substitution
Addressing the controversial substitution, Vinicius conceded his error. Interestingly, when he issued a public apology, Alonso’s name was conspicuously absent.
“That wasn’t a good moment, and I apologized to everyone involved. My desire is to play every single game, and I had never been substituted in such a manner before. Afterwards, with a calmer perspective, you realize you made a mistake. I’m still young, and each day presents a new opportunity for growth and improvement.”
“I Share a Special Connection with Arbeloa”
Earlier during the press conference, Vinicius affirmed his intention to extend his contract with Real Madrid, a decision reportedly influenced by manager Alvaro Arbeloa. Vinicius elaborated on his strong relationship with the former Castilla coach.
He added, “My bond with Arbeloa is special, much like the one I had with Ancelotti. He consistently articulates his expectations of me. I’ve always delivered my utmost, and I intend to continue doing so. I believe this is the longest I’ve gone without scoring a goal. I’ve gained valuable lessons from this challenging period and am eager to keep learning. Elite players invariably recover and perform.”
Fan Support Crucial Against Bayern Munich
Real Madrid faces their Champions League quarter-final clash against Bayern Munich as outsiders, following a disappointing 2-1 defeat to RCD Mallorca. Vinicius urged the supporters to provide a strong response to aid the team.
“Without question, the synergy between the players and the fans is paramount; it fundamentally alters the atmosphere of our home games, especially in Champions League encounters. We’re hosting a formidable opponent, but our experience in such high-stakes matches is considerable, and we hope to execute effectively.”
Reflecting on the RCD Mallorca Defeat
Following Saturday’s defeat, which left Real Madrid seven points adrift of Barcelona in the title race, manager Arbeloa accepted responsibility, stating he failed to inspire his team to 200% focus. Vinicius was questioned about the team’s apparent struggle with concentration.
Vinicius explained, “Some days are better than others; our focus levels fluctuate, and that was evident in Mallorca. We had just returned from the international break, and as the coach emphasized, without 200% concentration, you simply don’t win games.”
He continued, “Our cohesion wasn’t where we wanted it to be; we had just returned from representing our national teams. We must achieve that 200% intensity, exactly as the manager has stressed.”
Vinicius endured a challenging start to the season but has found impressive form under Arbeloa’s guidance. Over his past ten appearances, Vinicius has contributed to ten goals, notably scoring crucial braces against both Atletico Madrid and Manchester City.
