Alvaro Arbeloa Reflects on His Real Madrid Legacy As His Departure Looms: “I’ve Spent 20 Years Here”

Football

As Real Madrid prepares to face Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, it appears to be a significant moment for manager Alvaro Arbeloa. With the team not securing any trophies this season, the 43-year-old’s tenure is likely coming to an end. Speculation is already mounting about a potential replacement, with Jose Mourinho’s name being frequently mentioned.

Reflecting on his time in charge at the Bernabeu, Arbeloa shared his perspective on his recent experience. “I took over four months ago,” he stated. “I was a coach in the First Federation and I’m leaving having managed Real Madrid, becoming a First Division coach, and having participated in Champions League matches. I doubt many coaches can claim the same. These past four months have been an incredibly valuable and significant learning experience for me. Even speaking with you all is akin to a masterclass. When this chapter concludes, I will depart with a clear conscience.”

Arbeloa Expresses Gratitude for Real Madrid Fans’ Affection

When asked about how he hopes to be remembered should he depart in the summer, Arbeloa emphasized the personal connection he feels with the club’s supporters.

“Real Madrid has millions of fans, and naturally, opinions will vary. What matters most to me is the affection I feel from the fans,” he said. “I’m 43 years old, and I’ve dedicated 20 years of my life to Real Madrid, first as a youth player, then as a first-team player, an ambassador, and a youth coach. These have been many years in what I consider my true home. My overwhelming feeling regarding how the fans remember me is one of deep affection.”

Arbeloa on the Possibility of Jose Mourinho’s Return

Arbeloa also addressed the recent challenges within the Real Madrid dressing room and the possibility of Jose Mourinho returning to the club to succeed him as manager.

“I don’t understand the claim of an ‘ungovernable’ dressing room; I don’t agree with that assessment. That is not how I would describe the Real Madrid dressing room,” Arbeloa stated. “When the club makes a decision regarding the coach for next season, they will make an announcement at the appropriate time. From my perspective, both as a player and especially as a Real Madrid player, Mourinho is number one. I held this belief a month ago, and I continue to do so. Jose is, and always will be, ‘one of us.’ If he is here next season, I would be incredibly happy to welcome him back home.”
