Real Madrid’s journey in the 2025-26 Champions League came to a controversial end on Wednesday. Despite a spirited performance, the team was defeated by Bayern Munich with a 4-3 scoreline on the night, resulting in a 6-4 aggregate loss. The match’s outcome was heavily influenced by two late goals scored by Bayern after Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga received a contentious red card.
Camavinga was initially cautioned in the 78th minute. Just eight minutes later, he was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Harry Kane. This decision sparked outrage from the Real Madrid camp. In his post-match press conference, as reported by Diario AS, head coach Alvaro Arbeloa articulated the team’s profound sense of injustice.
“The players are extremely disheartened, particularly by the manner of our defeat. I congratulate Bayern on their successful tie, but we would have preferred to be overcome in a different fashion. The red card was an inexplicable decision that no one could comprehend, leading to feelings of injustice and anger. All the hard work and dedication have been undermined by a single call from the referee.”
“It’s baffling that a player would be sent off for such an action. At that stage, the tie was effectively decided. It was an unfair outcome, and we are deeply hurt. These are things beyond our control. I am immensely proud of my players and the fans. It pains me that we will not be lifting the Decimosexta this year. We must now focus on our next fixture.”
Arbeloa suggested that referee Slavko Vincic might have issued the second yellow card carelessly, possibly not realizing it was Camavinga’s second offense. He elaborated:
“I believe he made the card precisely for that reason, as Bayern players had to prompt him that it was the second yellow. However, that challenge did not warrant a booking. I don’t know if he lacks footballing knowledge or perhaps he wasn’t aware the player had already been cautioned, which would represent a double error. He certainly spoiled what could have been a magnificent contest.”
Arbeloa Unconcerned About His Future
When questioned about his position as Real Madrid manager, especially in light of what appears to be a trophyless season, Arbeloa expressed no anxiety regarding his future.
“I am not worried at all, and I will completely respect any decisions the club makes. I am loyal to this institution. If I am hurting, it’s not for myself, but for Real Madrid, because we won’t achieve our sixteenth title this year. My own future is of little concern. Since I took this role, it has never been a preoccupation. I feel I have done everything possible to support my players.”
