Atletico Madrid is planning extensive squad reinforcements this summer, identifying Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella as a primary target. The Spanish club is also actively pursuing a successor for Antoine Griezmann and new midfield options.
Sporting Director Mateu Alemany recently visited Italy to discuss a potential deal for Atalanta’s Ederson dos Santos. Earlier in January, Alemany was reportedly in Paris, attempting to persuade Kang-In Lee to join Atletico as a possible replacement for Antoine Griezmann, who has confirmed his summer transfer to Orlando City.
Marc Cucurella Emerges as Atletico Madrid’s Primary Left-Back Target
According to Diario AS, Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella is Atletico Madrid’s top preference for the left-back position. Despite having two years remaining on his contract, securing his transfer is considered a challenging prospect, especially since Chelsea has not indicated any willingness to sell him. Atletico had previously shown interest in the 27-year-old following his impressive displays for Eibar and Getafe, prior to his move to England.
Cucurella Open to La Liga Return
This development follows Cucurella’s recent confirmation that he contemplates a return to Spanish football in the future. While he expressed a particular affinity for his former club, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid will undoubtedly find his statements encouraging.
Atletico Madrid Explores Alternative Left-Back Options
Other potential left-back targets include Espanyol loanee Carlos Romero, who has a €45 million release clause. Sporting CP’s Maxi Araujo, Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys, and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown are also reportedly on Atletico’s radar. Coach Diego Simeone’s current first-choice left-back, Matteo Ruggeri, has been frequently supplemented by David Hancko in that role this season due to limited options.
