Barcelona have expressed reservations regarding their full-back positions throughout the current season. While it remains to be seen if this will translate into transfer market activity, the club is actively evaluating its potential options. Among the names frequently associated with the Blaugrana is Alejandro Grimaldo, a former product of La Masia.
The Spanish international, who has become a pivotal player for Bayer Leverkusen in recent years, has long expressed a desire to return to Spain. The 30-year-old has openly communicated this ambition and was linked with Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid last summer, though none of them made a decisive move to secure his signature.
Grimaldo Available for a Mere €12 Million This Summer
With only one year remaining on his contract, Bayer Leverkusen is reportedly willing to consider Grimaldo’s departure for a modest €12 million this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer. Reports also indicate that Juventus and Milan are monitoring his situation. Last summer, Barcelona had reached an agreement on personal terms with Grimaldo but ultimately decided against pursuing a €15 million deal.
Joao Cancelo Interest Could Impact Grimaldo Pursuit
However, it is not yet clear if Barcelona will definitively pursue a left-back. Grimaldo may not be their primary target. The Catalan club’s intention to strengthen their central defense could potentially lead to Gerard Martin shifting back to left-back, his original position. Furthermore, Barcelona reportedly aims to retain the services of loanee Joao Cancelo beyond the summer, although they face a challenging negotiation with Al-Hilal to achieve this.
Grimaldo would represent a solid acquisition. However, unless Alejandro Balde departs, Barcelona appears to be adequately covered in the left-back role. If the move for Cancelo cannot be finalized – with the Saudi Arabian club reportedly demanding €15 million for him – this scenario could potentially open the door for Barcelona to pursue Grimaldo.
