Barcelona is on the verge of extending Andreas Christensen’s tenure with the club by an additional two years, having reached a contract agreement with the Danish defender. This development comes as a surprise, considering his limited appearances over the past two seasons.
Christensen has played in just 23 matches in the last two years, largely due to recurring injuries. This season, the 30-year-old accumulated only 515 minutes of playing time. However, reports emerged in January indicating that President Joan Laporta was keen on offering him a new deal. Manager Hansi Flick has also publicly praised Christensen, though his opportunities have been scarce. The Danish international has featured only 97 times in his four seasons since joining on a free transfer from Chelsea.
According to reports from MD, Christensen and Barcelona have finalized terms on a two-year contract extension. Negotiations have been ongoing for months, with the Catalan club proposing a significant salary reduction. Ultimately, an agreement was reached. Flick’s confidence in Christensen is highlighted as a crucial factor, as is the player’s desire to remain in Barcelona. The Denmark international also received offers from Saudi Arabia this summer, but his ambition is to play a significant role under Flick next season.
Should Christensen’s extension materialize, it might signal Barcelona’s intention to refrain from making substantial investments in a new center-back this summer. This is especially true if Eric Garcia is considered for a move to right-back next season. With Christensen, Pau Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo, and Gerard Martin already in the center-back positions, a departure would likely be necessary to accommodate a new signing. Previous strong links to Alessandro Bastoni have reportedly cooled.
