Christian Kofane, a promising 19-year-old striker for Bayer Leverkusen, is attracting significant attention from top European clubs. His agent, Eric Depolo, has indicated that Barcelona and Arsenal are actively monitoring the young talent.
The 19-year-old Cameroonian international began his European journey last season with Albacete in Spain’s Segunda division. Following an impressive half-season where he netted eight goals and provided one assist in 20 matches, clubs like Real Madrid, Real Betis, and Sevilla pursued him. Ultimately, Leverkusen secured his services for €5 million, and Kofane has continued his strong form, contributing to a goal or assist every 116 minutes, accumulating seven goals and eight assists across 39 appearances for the German club.
Agent Confirms Barcelona’s Interest in Kofane
Depolo affirmed Arsenal’s genuine interest, stating, “Yes, Arsenal’s interest is genuine. The manager (Mikel Arteta) likes him very much.” He then broadened the list of interested parties to include Chelsea, Newcastle, Everton, Brentford, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.
When questioned about a potential frontrunner, Depolo pointed towards Arsenal, while also confirming direct contact with Barcelona.
Depolo elaborated on Arsenal’s strong position: “I think it is too early to say, but due to the fact that the player speaks Spanish, like Mikel Arteta, and that William Saliba is originally from Cameroon, I would say Arsenal are in pole position. Yes, there is contact between me and Arsenal. But their focus right now is to win the league — from there everything will start moving.”
Would Barcelona Risk Signing Kofane?
While Kofane has undeniably enjoyed a rapid ascent in European football, possessing qualities that could propel him to the top, Barcelona’s immediate need for a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski might lead them to prioritize a more seasoned forward. Despite Kofane’s age, his market value is unlikely to be low. However, Barcelona could be keeping him on their radar as a backup option should they fail to secure a more established target, or as a future prospect.
