With Barcelona facing financial constraints for acquiring a new number nine this summer, they are reportedly setting their sights on Newcastle United’s and England’s forward, Anthony Gordon. The potential departure of Robert Lewandowski, or his continued presence on reduced terms and with a diminished role, has opened up the need for a left-wing option. Gordon is being considered as a viable candidate for this position.
While Atlético Madrid’s Julian Alvarez was initially identified as Barcelona’s top choice, Atlético has indicated they are not looking to sell this summer. Other players like Vedat Muriqi, Alexander Sorloth, and Joao Pedro have also been mentioned as potential alternatives. For the left wing specifically, while Ez Abde, Jan Virgili, and Victor Munoz have been seen as rotational options, Gordon is now being viewed as a potential substitute for Raphinha.
According to RAC1, Barcelona’s interest in Gordon this summer is confirmed. The 25-year-old has been rumored to be considering an exit, but this is the first time Barcelona has been linked with him. The Catalan club is well aware of his capabilities, having faced him twice this season in their three encounters with Newcastle.
Furthermore, Sport has published images of Deco, Barcelona’s Sporting Director, meeting with Gordon’s agents in Barcelona. His potential transfer fee is estimated to be around €80 million. It’s also noted that his agents are in discussions with several clubs, including Bayern Munich, which also expresses interest in the player.
Gordon Shares Similar Traits with Raphinha
Barcelona believes that Gordon possesses several qualities that make him comparable to Raphinha. Deco has included him on the club’s shortlist of desired signings. Like the Brazilian winger, Gordon exhibits an intense pressing style and possesses the pace to exploit space behind opposing defenses.
Potential Role for Gordon
Although Gordon has increasingly played as a central forward this season, he developed his skills as a winger. This season, he has contributed 17 goals and five assists in 46 appearances. Amidst speculation that Barcelona might consider an offer from Saudi Arabia for Raphinha, Deco appears to be preparing Gordon as a contingency plan should such a deal materialize.
