Despite recent transfer rumors focusing on strengthening their attack, Barcelona has also been considering defensive reinforcements for the upcoming summer window. This is not the first time this year that the Catalan club has been linked with a promising young Spanish talent for their backline.
Early in the summer, a move for Alessandro Bastoni was rumored, but uncertainties surrounding Hansi Flick’s position reportedly led to its collapse. Throughout the latter half of the season, Barcelona has been connected with various defenders, as several positions in the squad for next season remain uncertain.
Second Pursuit of Jorge Salinas for Barcelona
Following their Copa del Rey victory over Racing Santander, where Barcelona won 2-1, reports indicated that the club was impressed with defender Jorge Salinas, even though he did not participate in that particular match. Local Cantabrian news outlets, Arco FM and Diario Montanes, have now reiterated Barcelona’s interest in the 19-year-old. According to MD, Salinas is under contract until 2029, with a release clause set around €10 million. The potential for a deal could be further facilitated by the close relationship between Barcelona and Salinas’ agent, Jorge Mendes.
Versatile and Talented Prospect
Salinas is capable of playing as both a left-back and a centre-back, though he has predominantly featured at left-back for Racing Santander this season. He made 33 appearances and provided seven assists, contributing to Racing’s promotion back to La Liga. In his role with the Spain U19 team, where he has earned five caps and scored twice, Salinas has been deployed as a centre-back. He is also set to represent La Roja in the U19 Euros this summer. It’s likely that Racing Santander will face competition for Salinas’ signature, whether from Barcelona or other clubs.
