Barcelona Move Ahead of Bayern Munich in Race to Sign Premier League Forward

Football

Barcelona is actively planning to strengthen their attacking line this summer, aiming to recruit at least two forwards. Their priorities include securing a new left winger and a striker. The need for a left winger remains a key objective, irrespective of any developments concerning Marcus Rashford. Presently, there’s a strong possibility that an international teammate of the Manchester United loanee could make a move to the Spotify Camp Nou.

The Catalan club has been exploring various avenues to bolster their offense, with names like Julian Alvarez, Joao Pedro, and Harry Kane featuring prominently on their wish list. Another player who is increasingly gaining favor with sporting director Deco is Anthony Gordon.

Gordon is widely expected to depart Newcastle United this summer and has already initiated discussions with Bayern Munich regarding a transfer. However, according to recent reports, Barcelona has intensified their efforts to sign the player. This development could be a setback for the Bavarian giants, as the 25-year-old is reportedly leaning towards a move to the La Liga champions.

Deco recently traveled to London, where he held talks with the representatives of Chelsea’s Joao Pedro. During this trip, discussions also encompassed a potential summer transfer for Gordon. Barcelona has communicated its interest directly to the player, who is reportedly enthusiastic about the prospect of donning the Blaugrana jersey.

Barcelona Views Gordon as Versatile Winger and Striker Option

During the 2025-26 season, Gordon showcased his versatility by playing effectively as both a winger and a striker for Newcastle, contributing 17 goals and five assists across all competitions. Barcelona sees him as a player capable of filling both roles within their squad, which could alleviate the pressure on Deco to find a definitive replacement for Lewandowski.

The primary obstacle at this stage is the transfer fee. Newcastle United is reportedly seeking €85-90 million for his transfer this summer. While previous reports suggested a deal could be struck for €75 million, which would be more financially feasible for Barcelona, it would still represent a significant portion of their transfer budget intended for acquiring a new centre-back and a number nine.
