Barcelona Set to Offload Major Salary This Summer with Ter Stegen Exit

Football

As the transfer window approaches, Barcelona finds itself at the center of numerous rumors, not only concerning potential new arrivals but also significant player departures. With ambitious plans to strengthen their attack with a top striker and bolster their central defense, the Catalan giants are likely to facilitate several exits this summer.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen is reportedly among the key players Barcelona aims to offload this summer. The 33-year-old goalkeeper and team captain, currently on loan at Girona, has spent the majority of the season sidelined by injury. Although he is anticipated to return in May, his loan move was primarily intended to gain crucial playing time and boost his prospects of becoming Germany’s starting goalkeeper for the upcoming World Cup.

Nagelsmann Casts Doubt on Ter Stegen’s World Cup Hopes

Earlier this week, prior to Germany’s 2-1 friendly victory against Ghana, national team manager Julian Nagelsmann conceded that Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s chances of participating in the World Cup across the USA, Canada, and Mexico were quite slim.

Nagelsmann shared insights from a recent conversation, stating, “We spoke briefly the day before yesterday. He’s always there when needed and when he can contribute. He doesn’t just look out for himself, but also considers the team. Out of respect for him, I’m not going to close the door on him going to the World Cup, but the chances are very slim; he’s been out for almost a year. He needs to accelerate his rehabilitation. He’s not in much pain anymore, but everything takes time. And he’s not 21 anymore,” as reported by Marca.

Nagelsmann’s subsequent remarks strongly suggest that he has already moved on from considering ter Stegen as a primary option.

He further elaborated on his current goalkeeping hierarchy: “Oliver Baumann is the starter and Alexander Nubel is the backup. Alex fulfills this role very well, just as you’d expect from a very, very good backup. Alex does a fantastic job and in many countries he would be the starter. We have no problems in goal.”

Barcelona Aims to Facilitate Ter Stegen’s Summer Departure

Ter Stegen’s path to recovery might significantly influence his future in Spanish football. According to Sport, Barcelona is keen for him to return to action before the season concludes, as this would enhance his appeal to potential buyers during the summer transfer window. Should he miraculously make it to the World Cup, it would be an even greater boost for the Blaugrana’s transfer plans.

Barcelona had previously considered a transfer for ter Stegen last summer after signing Joan Garcia, though they avoided actively pushing for his departure at that time. Now, the club’s strategy is to facilitate ter Stegen’s exit if feasible. They have reportedly already initiated discussions with Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro, eyeing him as a potential backup for Garcia. Furthermore, the continuity of Wojciech Szczesny, potentially another option, is also uncertain.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen ranks among Barcelona’s top earners and still has two years remaining on his contract. Considering his age, history of injuries, and substantial salary, finding a club prepared to sign him might prove challenging. Moreover, with his family settled in Catalonia, he possesses an additional personal motivation to remain and fulfill his current contract with the club.
