Barcelona’s transfer window has been marked by aggressive moves to strengthen their forward line, creating an uncertain future for Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford.
Rashford has expressed his desire to remain at the club this summer and seemed confident following a conversation with manager Hansi Flick. Flick reportedly assured Rashford that he was counting on him for the upcoming season and had approved his return. However, Barcelona has been hesitant to meet the €30 million buy-out clause, aiming to renegotiate with Manchester United, who are firm on their valuation.
Barcelona’s Contractual Limit on the Rashford Deal
According to Sport, Rashford’s buy-out clause expires on June 15th, two weeks before his loan contract concludes. While it’s plausible they might let this expire and resume negotiations, their recent pursuit of Anthony Gordon has introduced further doubt. Barcelona has reportedly agreed on a deal exceeding €80 million for Gordon, whose primary positions are left-wing and central striker – the same roles Rashford occupies. Despite this, Ben Jacobs has stated that his sources indicate Gordon’s transfer does not directly affect the Rashford deal.
Uncertainty Surrounding Barcelona’s Forward Plans
Adding to this complex situation is Barcelona’s interest in Julian Alvarez. If this transfer were to materialize, Barcelona would have Raphinha, Gordon, Rashford, Alvarez, and Ferran Torres competing for only two forward positions, with at least three of them expecting to be starters. It seems unlikely that Barcelona would pursue Gordon and retain Rashford if Raphinha also remains at the club.
