According to recent reports, Croatian football legend Luka Modric might be set for an earlier-than-anticipated return to Real Madrid this summer, amidst speculation surrounding his future. The 40-year-old midfielder appears to be nearing the end of his tenure at AC Milan after just one season.
Modric departed Real Madrid last summer on a free transfer to join AC Milan after his contract with Los Blancos was not renewed following the Club World Cup. He quickly established himself as a starter under manager Max Allegri, impressing the Serie A with his skill and consistent performance. A significant portion of his 35 appearances were from the outset, and he was instrumental in AC Milan’s pursuit of a Champions League spot for the following season. However, a fractured cheekbone sidelined him during the crucial final stages of the season, leading to AC Milan missing out on Champions League qualification as Juventus overtook them on the final day.
Modric May Retire After the World Cup
Modric is expected to be fit in time for the upcoming World Cup, where he will captain Croatia in the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, Italian media has been abuzz with speculation that he might consider retiring from professional football after this summer’s competition. Prior to the dismissals of Allegri and Sporting Director Igli Tare, Modric had been offered a one-year contract extension by AC Milan, a decision he has reportedly delayed.
Could Modric Rejoin Real Madrid This Summer?
Diario AS has highlighted President Florentino Perez’s past statement that the door would “always be open” for Modric’s return to Real Madrid in any capacity he desired. Given the proximity of his potential retirement decision, the exact nature of his future role, whether as a coach, advisor, ambassador, or sporting director, remains unclear. Nevertheless, Real Madrid is reportedly keen to welcome Modric back into the club fold.
Furthermore, there are already reports indicating Real Madrid’s intention to bring back former midfield partner Toni Kroos as an advisor, who would contribute to transfer decisions and matters within the dressing room.
