Atletico Madrid has surprisingly emerged as a strong contender for the acquisition of Manchester City’s veteran player, Bernardo Silva. Sporting Director Mateu Alemany is reportedly working diligently to secure him on a free transfer as his contract with the Etihad club concludes this summer, marking the end of his nine-year tenure.
For an extended period, Silva, who is 31, has been strongly associated with a move to Barcelona. The Portuguese international had expressed a desire to join the Catalan giants, where his agent, Jorge Mendes, has significant connections. However, Barcelona has reportedly declined the opportunity to sign him. This development placed Juventus at the forefront of clubs vying for his signature.
Atletico Madrid Leads the Race for Bernardo Silva
According to reports, Silva is leaning towards prioritizing a transfer to the Metropolitano stadium. While Juventus, AC Milan, and Barcelona have all shown interest, Atletico’s offer is currently the most appealing to him. Consequently, there is a sense of ‘moderate optimism’ regarding the club’s ability to finalize a deal for Silva. Although alternative targets like Julian Brandt have been mentioned, the signing of Silva has garnered support from ‘all levels of the club’. Alemany is in negotiations with Mendes for a two-year contract, with an option for a one-year extension contingent on performance.
Can Bernardo Silva Fill Antoine Griezmann’s Shoes?
Upon the news of Silva being a target for Atletico, he was immediately considered a potential successor to Antoine Griezmann, who is set to depart this summer. While Griezmann has been operating in a deeper role at times this season, Silva has traditionally been more of a midfielder. Silva possesses the capability to operate effectively as an attacking midfielder (number 10), though he typically doesn’t make the same kind of runs behind the defense that Griezmann is still known for. This season, Silva has contributed three goals and five assists in his 52 appearances.
