Real Madrid Evaluating Three Options to Replace Dani Carvajal This Summer

Football

Real Madrid faces the task of finding a successor for their captain, Dani Carvajal, as he prepares to depart the club this summer. Following the decision not to extend his contract, Carvajal will play his final match at the Santiago Bernabeu against Athletic Club, where a tribute is planned for the veteran player.

Carvajal’s departure necessitates a move in the transfer market. The 34-year-old was expected to vie with Trent Alexander-Arnold for the right-back role after the Englishman’s arrival last summer. However, both players’ seasons were hampered by injuries, leading to Fede Valverde occasionally being deployed in the position. While both managed to overcome fitness issues in the latter half of the season, Carvajal saw limited playing time.

Jose Mourinho’s Recommendation: Diogo Dalot

Amidst speculation surrounding potential new signings under Jose Mourinho, who is reportedly close to an agreement with Real Madrid, Manchester United’s right-back Diogo Dalot has emerged as a key target. Mourinho, familiar with Dalot from his tenure at Old Trafford, is reportedly keen on bringing the versatile 27-year-old to the Spanish capital. Dalot’s contract extends until 2028, suggesting that Manchester United would likely seek a substantial transfer fee.

Internal Solutions for Real Madrid

Alternatively, Spanish outlet Diario AS suggests that Real Madrid is also considering promoting from within their own academy to provide backup for Alexander-Arnold. With priorities in central defense and midfield, the club may not allocate a significant budget to the right-back position. While players like Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Porro are admired, they are deemed too expensive. Similarly, Liverpool’s Jeremie Frimpong and Chelsea’s Reece James are also liked but financially out of reach. Free transfer options such as Zeki Celik, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Cruzeiro’s William are not considered up to the required standard.

As a result, young right-backs Jesus Fortea (19) and David Jimenez (21) are being evaluated. Both have been linked with moves away from the club, with Fortea seeking senior playing time and attracting interest from Como. Jimenez impressed during brief appearances earlier in the year, even starting ahead of Carvajal on one occasion. While Mourinho has historically not relied heavily on academy products, circumstances may force his hand.
