Diego Simeone Clashes with Former Atletico Madrid Sporting Director

During the Champions League semi-final match between Atletico Madrid and Arsenal, tensions flared in the closing moments, despite Atletico’s overall sporting demeanor in defeat. Atletico’s manager, Diego Simeone, became involved in an altercation with an Arsenal staff member, later identified as Andrea Berta, Arsenal’s Sporting Director and a former colleague.

As the match neared its end in stoppage time, a visibly animated Simeone noticed Berta, who had come down to the pitchside and was gesturing emphatically for the referee to signal the final whistle. Simeone approached Berta and made physical contact, pushing him. The incident required intervention from other staff members and the fourth official to separate the two. Simeone received a yellow card and claimed he was merely instructing Berta to leave the area.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta also received a yellow card for his animated behavior during the final stages of the game.

Berta’s History with Atletico Madrid Adds Intrigue

The confrontation gains an added layer of interest due to the past professional relationship between Simeone and Berta. Berta was a long-time colleague of Simeone at Atletico Madrid, having worked at the club for eight years before departing for Arsenal approximately 18 months prior to this match. Reports from their time together at Atletico suggested disagreements regarding player recruitment and transfers, particularly concerning the club’s record signing, Joao Felix. While Berta was previously outranked by Director of Football Carlos Bucero, and later by Mateu Alemany as sporting director, who is now believed to hold significant influence over signings alongside Simeone, the past friction may have contributed to the confrontation.
