Getafe has taken a significant stride towards European qualification following a commanding 3-1 win against a struggling RCD Mallorca side at the Coliseum. Mallorca’s early errors proved to be their undoing, hindering their ability to establish a foothold in the match. This victory puts Jose Bordalas’ Getafe on the brink of securing European football for the second time in his current tenure.
The visiting team initially displayed ambition, adopting a direct approach and pressing high up the pitch. This strategy almost paid dividends when Zito Luvumbo had an early opportunity, though he couldn’t quite control his shot after a promising build-up involving Jan Virgili. Both Getafe and Mallorca fielded young players, with Damian Caceres starting in midfield for the home side and Luis Orejuela at left-back for the visitors. It was Orejuela’s mistake that led to the opening goal.
A misplaced clearance by Orejuela allowed Allan Nyom to gain momentum. His unchallenged cross into the box found Martin Satriano at the far post, who made no mistake in finishing. The 38-year-old Cameroonian, Nyom, received a rare start and was met with appreciative chants from the home crowd.
Mallorca, not for the first time, struggled to find their rhythm against Getafe’s organized defense, with misplaced passes disrupting their flow. However, a corner just before the half-hour mark nearly brought them level. Vedat Muriqi’s header struck the underside of the crossbar, offering a glimmer of hope. Another dangerous set piece caused problems for Getafe’s defense, and a clever touch from Muriqi then sent Luvumbo racing behind the defense again. However, Zaid Romero’s timely intervention prevented a clear chance.
Just as Mallorca seemed to be gaining control of the game, Getafe struck again. Indecision between Orejuela and Martin Valjent on a long ball allowed it to bounce. When Valjent opted to head the ball back to goalkeeper Leo Roman, he was disoriented and misjudged the pass, nodding it over the onrushing goalkeeper. Satriano, anticipating the play, pounced on the loose ball and tapped it into an empty net.
Getafe Squeezes Mallorca Out of the Game
The early stages of the second half settled into a midfield battle, a scenario Bordalas would have been content with. Around the hour mark, Zaid Romero extended Getafe’s lead to 3-0 from a set piece. Despite a brief response from Mallorca, with Omar Mascarell scoring from a similar situation two minutes later, their hopes of a comeback were ultimately dashed.
Mallorca struggled to create further significant chances, and the game largely petered out without incident in the final 20 minutes. Getafe appeared comfortable defending their two-goal advantage, which significantly boosted their prospects for European qualification. This victory propels Los Azulones four points clear of Real Sociedad, their closest challengers for the 7th-place Conference League spot.
Meanwhile, Demichelis’ side finds themselves in 17th place, only avoiding the relegation zone on goal difference. Girona could leapfrog them with just a point in their upcoming match against Real Sociedad, highlighting the intensely competitive nature of this LaLiga season. Mallorca departs the Coliseum with a sense of frustration and impotence, having gifted Getafe crucial advantages through unforced errors. They now face Levante in Valencia, while Getafe travels to Elche, another team battling relegation.
