Alessandro Bastoni, a defender whom Barcelona is reportedly keen to sign this summer, is currently navigating a challenging period in his professional career. He has faced significant criticism following Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, particularly due to a red card he received during their penalty shootout loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina earlier this week.
The 26-year-old was sent off in the first half of that crucial match for preventing a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Italy had been leading 1-0 at the time, but after subsequently conceding a late equalizer, they ultimately lost in a penalty shootout. This defeat marked their third consecutive failure to qualify for the World Cup.
Bastoni has endured considerable backlash regarding the red card incident. According to Inter legend Beppe Bergomi, as reported by Sport, it would be a prudent move for the defender to depart from the Nerazzurri and Serie A altogether during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Bergomi was quoted saying, “I believe he will need to leave Italy for his own well-being. We would be losing an exceptional talent, undoubtedly one of modern football’s finest defenders. I feel great sorrow, but I think for his own benefit, he should seek a club abroad.”
Current Climate Could Significantly Influence Bastoni’s Future
Inter appears open to Bastoni’s departure, having reportedly granted Barcelona permission to engage in contract discussions with the central defender. While it’s yet to be confirmed if Bastoni will accept a transfer to Spotify Camp Nou, the intense criticism he’s received in his home country makes a move away seem increasingly probable.
For now, Bastoni is expected to concentrate on completing the current season with Inter, after which decisions about his future will be made. Barcelona continues its efforts to secure his signature, a potential acquisition that would represent a significant coup for the Catalan club.
