Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira May Avoid Barcelona Corruption Trial

Football

Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former Vice-President of the Referees Committee (CTA), appears likely to escape legal consequences for his alleged involvement in the ‘Negreira case’. Barcelona is facing accusations of sporting corruption stemming from payments totaling between €7 million and €8 million made to Negreira over a 17-year period, ostensibly for consultancy services. The club maintains its innocence, asserting the legitimacy of these payments.

Negreira was reportedly engaged by Barcelona to provide scouting reports on match officials during the time in question. However, prosecutors have been unable to substantiate that these services were actually rendered. In light of the allegations, Real Madrid and several other football clubs have joined the proceedings as claimants, seeking compensation for potential damages. The investigation, which became public three years ago, is still in the evidence-gathering phase.

Negreira Unlikely to Face Trial for Sporting Corruption

According to reports from El Mundo, via Marca, Negreira is highly improbable to be brought to trial for the charges he faces. He has not provided further testimony since an initial police questioning in 2024, where he was deemed unfit to do so and subsequently refused to answer questions. The situation has reportedly worsened for Negreira, with a recent medical examination indicating that his dementia has progressed and he may have Alzheimer’s disease. This examination was requested by his legal counsel, and unless unforeseen circumstances arise, Negreira is not expected to be summoned to court.

Barcelona and Real Madrid Exchange Barbs Over the Case

This development marks the first significant update in the case for some time, following a year of testimony from various individuals associated with Barcelona between 2001 and 2018. Meanwhile, Real Madrid has intensified its public statements on the matter, with President Florentino Perez recently demanding swift punishment. Barcelona’s interim president, Rafa Yuste, characterized Perez’s remarks as “pathetic,” and the Catalan club has indicated it is considering legal action against Perez.
