Real Madrid is reportedly laying the groundwork for the upcoming summer transfer window, which will mark the first under Jose Mourinho’s management in 13 years. Mourinho is set to have the ultimate authority on player acquisitions, and he has already identified several potential recruits for the squad he will inherit from Alvaro Arbeloa.
The club is looking to bolster its defense and midfield, areas that have shown weakness in recent seasons. In midfield, Mourinho has expressed interest in signing Manchester City and Spanish international Rodri Hernandez. For the defense, he has put forward another name.
According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, as cited by MD, Mourinho is keen for Real Madrid to pursue Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni. Bastoni has been Barcelona’s primary defensive target for several months. However, with a move to Catalonia now appearing uncertain, Real Madrid might be poised to make a bid.
Bastoni was reportedly eager to join Barcelona this summer. Yet, due to a lack of progress in negotiations with Inter over the past few weeks, he seems resigned to the possibility of his dream move not materializing. Despite this, a transfer to Spain could still be on the cards, and the prospect of joining Real Madrid is one he would likely welcome.
Is Bastoni the Right Fit for Real Madrid?
Acquiring a left-sided center-back is a logical move for Real Madrid. With David Alaba’s confirmed departure in the summer, Dean Huijsen will be the only natural left-footed center-back in the first-team squad for the upcoming season, although he is also comfortable playing on the right.
Considering this, Bastoni would represent a significant addition. He would fit well into the defensive options available to Mourinho next season. It remains to be seen whether Real Madrid will indeed make a move to sign him.
