MSI’s New Power Supplies Feature Buzzer Alert for GPU Power Issues

Esports

Following incidents known as ‘Meltgate,’ where 12VHPWR and later 12V-2×6 GPU power connectors were implicated in graphics card melting, MSI has introduced an enhanced GPU Safeguard technology in two of its latest power supplies. This system actively monitors current levels supplied to the graphics card to prevent similar catastrophic failures.

MSI states that this technology includes both a software pop-up alert and a physical hardware buzzer to notify users of any power delivery abnormalities, specifically concerning the connector pins. This audible warning indicates a potential risk to expensive hardware.

Dubbed ‘GPU Safeguard+,’ this feature is integrated into MSI’s MPG Ai 1600TS PCIE5 and MPG Ai1300TS PCIE5 power supplies. It creates an ‘intelligent bridge’ between the graphics card and the PSU, often leveraging MSI Afterburner for comprehensive monitoring.

Upon detecting any power delivery irregularities, the system immediately reduces power consumption and activates the aforementioned warnings. Crucially, GPU Safeguard+ is GPU agnostic, making it compatible with any graphics card utilizing a 12V-2×6 connector, regardless of manufacturer.

Considering these supported PSUs are high-wattage units, typically chosen for powerful builds featuring cards like the RTX 5090 which demand significant power, this protective measure is highly beneficial.

The cost of high-end graphics cards makes such protection even more critical; preventing the destruction of a $4,000+ component is paramount.

It’s important to note that many incidents involving melting power connectors have been linked to improper installation. Therefore, ensuring the graphics card’s 16-pin connector is correctly seated remains a crucial step before initial system boot, irrespective of the power supply.

The hope is that this technology will eventually extend to lower-wattage PSUs, offering greater peace of mind to a wider range of PC users. While the author humorously suggests more imaginative alert sounds, the primary value lies in the significant safety it provides.
