Real Madrid Defender to Stay Next Season

Football

Real Madrid has secured an agreement with veteran defender Antonio Rüdiger to continue with the club for another year. This comes on the same day that the club announced the departure of captain Dani Carvajal. Rüdiger’s extension follows speculation about a potential move earlier in the year.

Despite a significant portion of the first half of the season being missed due to injury, and ongoing concerns about his arthritic knees, Rüdiger finished the season as a starter for Real Madrid. He surpassed the competition from Dean Huijsen, who was signed last summer.

Rüdiger Reaches Agreement with Real Madrid on Extension

According to Diario AS, Rüdiger, who is 33 years old, has agreed to a one-year deal, adhering to the club’s policy of only offering one-year contracts to players over 30. Although he initially sought a two-year contract, he understood the club’s policy and has accepted the one-year extension. Despite a financially attractive offer from Saudi Arabia, Rüdiger has chosen to remain at Real Madrid.

This season, Rüdiger has made 26 appearances and scored one goal, with a notable improvement in his playing time after December, having only played twice before that month.

Only Three Central Defenders Guaranteed Real Madrid Stay

With Rüdiger’s extension, Real Madrid now has only three central defenders guaranteed to remain at the club for the next season. This situation is compounded by the recent injury to Éder Militão, who is expected to miss the World Cup. Joining Rüdiger and Militão in the central defense will be Huijsen. The future of Raúl Asensio beyond the summer is uncertain, and David Alaba is set to leave at the end of his contract.

Reports suggest that Manchester City defender Joško Gvardiol has been offered to Real Madrid as they look to strengthen their defensive line. Rüdiger will likely face increased competition for his starting position next season.
