Real Madrid Icon Questions Xabi Alonso’s Departure: “He Wasn’t Given Enough Time”

Football

The 2025-26 season has proven to be a difficult one for Real Madrid, with the club set to end the campaign without any major silverware. Alvaro Arbeloa’s squad has already been eliminated from the Champions League, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup. Furthermore, overcoming a nine-point deficit to Barcelona in the La Liga title race appears highly improbable.

A significant turning point in Real Madrid’s season was the departure of Xabi Alonso, who left by mutual agreement following a Super Cup final loss to Barcelona. While the former Bayer Leverkusen coach had a respectable record during his tenure, his methods reportedly failed to gain the full confidence of the dressing room, ultimately leading to his exit.

According to Marca, Real Madrid legend Luis Figo has voiced his skepticism regarding the club’s decision to let Alonso go. Figo believes that the 44-year-old was not given adequate time to implement his vision and leave his mark at the Bernabéu.

“The reality is that it’s a poor season. For Real Madrid, if you don’t win, it’s always a negative season. When titles are missing, it means things haven’t worked out. I don’t think he (Alonso) was given enough time. We didn’t even have enough time to properly analyze his months here. It’s very complicated,” Figo stated.

Figo’s Champions League Favorites

When asked about his predictions for the current Champions League winner, Figo excluded Atletico Madrid, Spain’s only remaining representative in the competition.

“Based on what they’ve shown, my favorites are PSG and Bayern. They are two very strong teams. I appreciate their style of play, but anything can happen. We are in the most exciting phase of the Champions League, and the teams that have reached this stage have earned their place.”

Praise for Lamine Yamal

Figo also offered glowing remarks about Lamine Yamal, who continues to impress and develop at his former club, Barcelona.

“He is incredible. He is an immense talent. I hope he continues to develop as a player and has an extraordinary career.”
