Barcelona Sporting Director Deco on Striker Search: “We Don’t Rule Anyone Out”

Football

Barcelona is actively planning for a crucial summer transfer window, with the acquisition of a new center-back and, more pressingly, a striker being top priorities. This heightened focus on finding a new forward comes after the confirmation of Robert Lewandowski’s departure at the end of the season.

Two primary candidates have emerged so far: Julian Alvarez and Joao Pedro. The individual responsible for making the final selection is Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco. He shared his thoughts on the matter during an appearance at the club’s end-of-season dinner on Wednesday, as reported by MD.

“Today is a somewhat somber day as Robert’s departure is now confirmed. It’s nearly impossible to find a replacement for Robert; he has been the premier striker in recent years, and his contributions to Barça during his tenure are incredibly difficult to replicate. However, this is the reality of football. Ferran arrived as a winger but has transitioned into a ‘number 9,’ but now is the time to make decisions and focus on strengthening the squad.”

“It’s not about a specific profile. We are not ruling anyone out or signing anyone prematurely. These are internal discussions. What we must ensure is that we will work diligently, as we do every year. We have lost a very significant player in Robert, and naturally, we are committed to reinforcing the team.”

Joao Pedro Currently Favored to Join

At this juncture, Joao Pedro appears to be the more probable acquisition compared to Alvarez. The Chelsea forward is reportedly open to a summer move, although the Premier League club is reluctant to part with him. Furthermore, with former Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso now in charge at Chelsea, Barcelona’s pursuit of Pedro is expected to be even more challenging.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen which player Deco will pursue and whether he can successfully complete a deal.
