With the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, just weeks away, national teams are finalizing their squads. Spain is set to announce its 26-man roster within the next 48 hours.
The Spanish team, aiming for their second World Cup title following their 2010 triumph in South Africa, will include talents like Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal. However, Yamal will be unavailable for the tournament opener against Cape Verde.
Speaking on a recent podcast, as reported by Diario AS, head coach Luis de la Fuente expressed his confidence in Spain’s chances in North America. He asserted that Spain is indeed among the favorites, stating:
“We have to be cautious, despite being favourites. We have to go with our feet on the ground. I don’t shy away, we are favourites, but we’re equally as favourites as England or France.”
De la Fuente Stresses National Team Unity
The Spanish coach also highlighted a shift in team dynamics, emphasizing that the squad now operates as a unified national team, free from club rivalries. He stated:
“There are no club players here, there are national team players. It’s a different mentality. We have to abstract ourselves from everything and always try to bring the best.”
The announcement of de la Fuente’s World Cup squad is highly anticipated. While the inclusion of Gavi has been largely confirmed due to his strong performances for Barcelona, several other selection decisions remain to be made.
