Villarreal capped off the 2025-26 La Liga season with an impressive 5-1 triumph over Atletico Madrid, marking a successful end to Marcelino Garcia Toral’s second tenure at La Ceramica.
While Atletico Madrid started the match with more attacking intent in the opening half-hour, Villarreal took the lead at the 30-minute mark. Dani Parejo converted a penalty kick, scored on his final appearance for the club, after Nicolas Pepe was fouled by Juan Musso. Just four minutes later, the home team extended their advantage when Ayoze Perez found the net from close range, his second goal in his last 18 outings.
Villarreal further solidified their lead in the 40th minute. A swift counter-attack saw Pepe set up Georges Mikautadze, who scored his 15th goal of his debut season with the Yellow Submarine (13 in La Liga).
Remarkably, the first half saw two more goals. Atletico Madrid managed to pull one back from an Antoine Griezmann corner, but Villarreal quickly re-established their three-goal lead as Pape Gueye fired home from the edge of the penalty area.
Ayoze Perez added his third goal of the match in the 54th minute, making the score 5-1 and effectively ending any hopes of an Atletico Madrid comeback. The home team comfortably managed the remainder of the game and gave a fitting send-off to Parejo, who was substituted for the final time as a Villarreal player.
Significant summers lie ahead for both Villarreal and Atletico Madrid
Both clubs now shift their focus to the summer transfer window. Villarreal face the immediate task of appointing a successor for Marcelino, with Rayo Vallecano’s head coach Inigo Perez reportedly being the frontrunner. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid are preparing for another period of significant spending, although the potential departure of star striker Julian Alvarez could shape their transfer strategy.
