Real Madrid concluded their 2025-26 season with a 4-2 victory against Athletic Club, a match marked by several significant farewells. Club captain Dani Carvajal bid adieu after a remarkable 13-year tenure at the Bernabéu. Head coach Alvaro Arbeloa also announced his departure earlier in the week, confirming he would not continue in his role. The third prominent figure leaving the club is David Alaba, whose contract will not be renewed.
Despite facing challenges in his final seasons, Alaba’s move from Bayern Munich in 2021 has largely been deemed a success. The Austrian defender has been a beloved figure among the club’s supporters. Following the conclusion of the match against Athletic on Saturday, Alaba addressed the fans in a brief speech, as reported by Marca.
“I am very grateful; we have achieved many successes. There were also moments like when I injured my knee, but you have always been with me, in my heart. I want to express my deepest thanks to the entire team, the staff, the coaches, the president… and of course, my family. It’s been a very special journey; I can’t describe my feelings.”
Alaba Deserved More from His Real Madrid Stint
Alaba enjoyed a strong start to his Real Madrid career. However, since tearing his ACL in December 2023, he has struggled to regain his peak form. In his last three seasons at the Bernabéu, he managed only 47 appearances across all competitions, largely due to persistent injury issues.
It’s widely believed that had Alaba avoided the severe injury he sustained in the match against Villarreal in 2023, his Real Madrid career could have yielded even greater accomplishments. Nevertheless, he departs the club with an impressive collection of silverware, including two La Liga titles, two Champions League winner’s medals, and a Copa del Rey, memories he will undoubtedly cherish. For now, his focus will shift to representing Austria in the upcoming World Cup.
