RC Deportivo de La Coruña Secures Return to La Liga After Eight-Year Absence

Football

With the 2026-27 La Liga season lineup now largely complete, a second promotion from Segunda has been confirmed this past weekend. Following Racing Club de Santander’s long-awaited return to the Spanish top flight, another prominent club, RC Deportivo de La Coruña, has also secured their place.

This season has been a notable one for Antonio Hidalgo’s squad, who will compete in La Liga for the first time since their relegation at the close of the 2017-18 season. They have consistently remained in contention at the top of the standings throughout the campaign. Their promotion was officially sealed on Sunday after a 2-0 victory against Real Valladolid at the Estadio Municipal José Zorrilla.

This result, combined with Almeria’s loss to Sporting Gijon, ensured Depor’s comeback to La Liga after an eight-year absence. This means that iconic clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid will once again visit Riazor. Furthermore, fans can anticipate the keenly awaited return of the Galician derby against Celta Vigo.

Final Promoted Side to Be Decided by Play-offs

In the upcoming weeks, the identity of the 20th and final team to participate in La Liga next season will be determined. The play-offs will serve as the decisive stage. However, with just one matchday remaining, no team has yet definitively secured a play-off spot, as six clubs—Almeria, Malaga, Las Palmas, Castellon, Burgos, and Eibar—are all competing for the four available positions.

As is typical, the conclusion of the Segunda season promises to be dramatic and exciting. For Depor, however, they can now afford to relax, to some extent. They still have a chance to win the title, though this would necessitate a home victory against Las Palmas and a defeat for Racing in their upcoming fixture against Cadiz.
