US Men’s National Team coach Mauricio Pochettino has refuted recent rumors of contact with Real Madrid regarding their managerial position. The Argentine strategist had previously been a candidate for Los Blancos after Zinedine Zidane’s departure in 2021 and is once again being mentioned as a possible choice for this summer.
Pochettino’s current contract with the USMNT concludes this summer, following his leadership of the host nation, the United States, in the 2026 World Cup. His name has emerged among several candidates, including Unai Emery and Jurgen Klopp, who are reportedly being considered by Real Madrid for their upcoming managerial vacancy.
Pochettino Dismisses Real Madrid Speculation
When questioned about the Real Madrid rumors at a Monday press conference, the 54-year-old manager denied any direct communication but acknowledged that he and his coaching team remain receptive to future career prospects.
“No, not at the moment, no,” Pochettino stated. “I believe we are extremely focused. I am entirely concentrated on the World Cup here. I think everyone is aware of my commitment to the national team. Discussing the future isn’t appropriate right now. There have been no approaches, and who knows what might happen?”
He added, “As I mentioned, we are open; we don’t have a future contract, but why not if we are content and the federation is content? It’s simply a matter of seeing. I believe the priority now is to focus on tomorrow, on the World Cup, and on striving for improvement. Our focus is on enhancing the team. Naturally, rumors circulate, but that’s part of our profession, and we must accept them.”
Reports Suggest Arbeloa Gaining Dressing Room Support
These speculations emerged several weeks ago, coinciding with a period when Alvaro Arbeloa’s position seemed insecure. However, recent impressive victories against Manchester City and Atletico Madrid have significantly bolstered his claim for the permanent managerial role. It appears he is steadily earning the trust of the squad, and sustained positive outcomes could secure him the job for the upcoming season as well.
