The final matchday of the Segunda division has concluded, determining the teams that will compete for the last promotion spot in the play-offs and identifying the final club to be relegated. Matchday 42 also saw Racing Santander secure the championship title following a decisive victory over Cadiz.
The Cantabrian team had already guaranteed their promotion with two matches remaining. Meanwhile, Deportivo La Coruna had also secured their place in La Liga in the previous round. Despite a two-point lead heading into the final weekend, Deportivo suffered a 2-1 defeat against Las Palmas, while Racing comfortably beat Cadiz to clinch the title.
Play-off Places Determined Amidst Final Day Drama
Las Palmas’ crucial victory secured them 5th position and a place in the play-offs. Had they not won, Burgos, who defeated Andorra 1-0, would have taken their spot. However, all four teams above them also secured victories. Eibar, finishing 8th, had a slim chance at the start of the day, but Castellon’s win was sufficient for the final play-off spot, placing them 6th with 72 points, level with Burgos. Malaga (4th) and Las Palmas (5th) finished one point ahead.
Malaga concluded their league campaign with a 2-0 win against the already relegated Real Zaragoza. The results from the teams below them meant that Almeria needed a win, and their top scorer Sergio Arribas (with 25 goals) provided the crucial goal in a 1-0 victory over Real Valladolid, securing them 3rd place with 74 points.
The play-off matchups are now set: Castellon will face Almeria, with the first leg scheduled for June 6th at 21:00 CEST, and the return leg on June 9th at the same time. Las Palmas will host the first leg of the other semi-final against Malaga on June 7th at 21:00 CEST, with the return leg on June 10th. The first leg of the final is on June 14th, and the second leg on June 20th.
Mirandes Becomes Final Side to be Relegated
The final relegation spot was also to be decided. Mirandes required a win against Leganes at Butarque to remain in the Segunda division. Los Jabalies were in a strong position to secure a victory until the 68th minute, when Alex Millan’s goal for Leganes, the only goal of the match, effectively ended their hopes of survival.
