The tactical gamble by West Ham’s manager, Nuno Espírito Santo, proved to be a costly one on Tyneside. His decision to start with a back three against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle backfired spectacularly. Instead of stifling the opposition, this formation inadvertently highlighted the strengths of Newcastle’s record signing, Alexander Isak. By the 26th minute, Nuno had been forced to abandon the three-man defense in favor of a more conventional back four. However, by that point, West Ham were already trailing 2-0, effectively finding themselves with one foot in the Championship.
