As the current Premier League campaign nears its end, an analysis has been conducted to identify the most outstanding attribute of each team in England’s top flight. Drawing inspiration from the philosophy of Spanish football coach Juanma Lillo, who famously stated, “What enriches you is the game, not the result. The result is a piece of data,” this evaluation prioritizes the process and style of play over mere outcomes.
This approach underpins the inaugural Football Style Awards, an initiative designed to honor the intricate processes that lead to success. While the awards are not solely about victory, they are informed by comprehensive data. In collaboration with a club data scientist, a new football application named futi has been developed over the past year. This app goes beyond simply identifying successful teams or players; it quantifies their specific strengths using detailed phase-of-play data and sophisticated models that measure team and player performance.
